LEAF Open Farm Sunday

Each year in June, farmers across the country open their gates to showcase food and farming. Since the launch of the initiative in 2006, over 2.5 million people have visited a farm with more than 1600 farmers taking part.
Many of our team at BASF support the day by visiting their local farm either as a visitor or with an information stand, to showcase how farmers support sustainable farming, the environment and the countryside.

This is Agriculture

Raising awareness of the diverse career opportunities available in the agricultural sector to both farming and non-farming audiences, is something we are passionate about at BASF. This is Agriculture is run by ‘Farmers Guardian’ to support the industry recruiting new talent and retain existing members of staff.
As well as sponsoring the initiative, we get involved by sharing some of our team stories and their career journey. Rory Galloway and Polly Lawman were first up.

LEAF Education

LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) Education, in partnership with their members, works to inspire and educate future generations about food, farming and the countryside.
It is an opportunity to bring farming into everyday life through a wider variation of resources and support offer. Last year alone, LEAF engaged 815 schools reaching over 16,368 children. Many farmers host school farm visits as part of the programme, some of whom are part of the BASF Real Results farmer community.

Oxford Farming Conference

The Oxford Farming Conference looks at the future of UK food and agriculture by bringing together inspiring people from the industry who are pushing boundaries and taking UK agriculture forward in a time of interesting political and technological change.
Hosted annually in January, some of our team attend to hear first hand about key changes and solutions that will impact farming as well as using the event as an opportunity to network with farmers, agronomists, scientists, politicians, the press and agricultural influencers.
Our sponsorship includes the OFC Emerging Leaders Programme which seeks out the best young leaders in UK agriculture, developing their skills and passion for the agri-food sector; and strengthening their network. The OFC Podcast is also sponsored by BASF.

Next Gen Fruit Growers

Through charitable giving, the group educates its members through a variety of events, visits and seminars. It also provides young people with the opportunities to join the fruit industry, as well as creating a powerful and meaningful networking group and encouraging the next generation of industry leaders.
The industry has a responsibility to support its young people in a positive way, to show them there is a real career opportunity in the fruit industry and that the rewards for ambitious, quality and hardworking well connected people are very real.

MDS Graduate Scheme

MDS is a partnership of food and fresh produce companies that aim to equip young people with the experience, training and mindset, so that they have the confidence and ability to rapidly become senior business leaders within the industry.
The graduate scheme is unique in providing graduates with the experience of four roles of real responsibility in four different businesses during their term. BASF are one of the organisations that offer placements, and we now employ a number of team members as a result of their secondment times with us on the MDS scheme.

The OFC Emerging Leader Programme seeks out the best young leaders in UK agriculture, securing a place at the two-day Oxford Farming Conference in January 2020.
The purpose of the Emerging Leaders’ initiative is to develop the skills and passion of potential leaders within the agri-food sector; building on the OFC’s successful scholar programme.

Digging for Innovation

Run by Farm491, the Digging for Innovation Challenge is seeking innovators who have solutions and tools to support the challenges farmers face with their soil health, climate change, productivity and biodiversity.
The successfully shortlisted candidates are required to pitch their idea to a panel of judges for a cash prize of £5000 and 12 months mentoring and business support from Fram491.
A member of the BASF team sits on the judging panel, and we attend the pre-interview workshop where the candidates receive guidance and support with the development of their pitch.
